RIP DAVID

Neighbor Jim, his nephew, the Admiral and I took a somber trip to distribute the ashes of David, Jim's life partner. We traveled to San Clemente's Seal Rock for the ritual. This rock can be seen from Jim's home high on the SC hillside. The ashes were scattered with white roses, stories were told and tears were shed. It was a beautiful and emotional day.

AVALON - THE NO FLY ZONE

With our Kings Canyon trip being canceled because of washed-out road conditions, we had time to head to the island for the 140th time. That's 280 crossings, yikes! The temps are still chilly when the sun gets behind the clouds and the water is not swimmer friendly but with all the rain this year, the island was as green as a shining emerald. The Admiral had put together a primo menu (baby back ribs, chicken tacos, bacon & eggs, etc) and off we went. Our first three nights were in Avalon and yes, we ventured into Antonio's for their pastrami cheese sandwich one day. Then it was off to Big Geiger. No other boats were anchored there, yea! We had it to ourselves we thought.  Soon we discovered we were not alone, we were being invaded by hundreds of kelp flies. Out came the fly swatters and the genocide began. Although Big Geiger is one of capts favorite spots to anchor, it was back to Avalon (the no fly zone) the next morning. Besides, the bass fishing in the harbor was the best that we could ever remember. Our crossing home was uneventful making it back in five hours. Number 140 did not disappoint.
