Jackpot is getting ready for this years two week Nesporado Get-A-Way in Catalina.
The Admiral and I have been making the most of the nice summer sailing conditions. Last Sunday we had lunch on board then headed out of the harbor for a mellow sail, until the wind died. Oh well, that happens sometimes. Then on Tuesday we were off to Newport Harbor for a two-night midweek trip. We anchored off Lido Island three hours after leaving Dana. The anchorage was almost deserted. Our mornings were overcast but around noon the sun would brake through for very pleasant afternoons. The local yacht clubs had youngsters of all ages involved in sailboat races, in and around the anchorage, and their skill level is remarkable. Quite a spectacle to watch. We met our very good friends, Matt and Laura, for breakfast at Charlie's Chili the morning of our return. Good time, good eats, good trip.
Danny and I have been trying to setup a sailing date for quite sometime and last Saturday we finally made it happen. He brought his two friends, Dodger Dave and Jeff (never had a bad hair day), along for the ride. Interesting day as we reefed the genny in 15-25 knot winds reaching 33 knots as we entered the harbor. Dave and Jeff took turns at the helm and we all had a great time.
Fire crews quickly responded to the boat fire in the East Marina yesterday and contained it to one vessel. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
Several personal observations on the handful of boat fires over the years: all have been power boats and all have been total losses.
The marina was filled with lots of people enjoying themselves celebrating our Independence Day. Water fights in the main channel went on for hours and even the Harbor Patrol got into the act. The day was capped by a 9pm fireworks display that was as good as it gets. God Bless the USA!
